Establishing Vindhya e-infomedia, a for-profit, socio-economic venture- enabled by differently-abled X Close
The beginning:
To achieve the goal of enabling employment for people with disabilities (PwD) and ensuring that they can become the bread winners for their family Vindhya was founded on 4 July 2006 with two employees on board. Vindhya e-Infomedia provides IT and ITES services by connecting the world with people with disabilities. Vindhya delivers high quality, reliable, scalable back office and contact centre solutions. There were so many such people who needed jobs. And we did not want it to be an NGO. It needed to be a profitable venture because it had to be sustainable – main reason for making Vindhya, a for-profit organization.
Inspiration:
Vindhya wanted to bring together business and philanthropy. Persons with disabilities are mostly ignored by mainstream society and they have very limited opportunity to join the mainstream. Providing employment opportunities to them, and helping them emerge as confident and competent individuals in this world, was a burning problem and Pavithra wanted to address this need through Vindhya.
Initial Hurdles
One of the initial hurdles we faced was convincing clients who wondered if their work force would be productive enough. Though a majority of her staff consists of people with disabilities, none of it comes in the way of delivering quality services. And there's no element of pity or "waiver" in the process. If a client is sceptical, management asked them to give a pilot project and if they like our work they can hand other projects as well. Pavithra says that organisations are more open to working with people with disabilities now. "Today, even corporates look at them as potential employees." Vindhyans, our employees, dedication, hard work paved way for many more new customers and through that Vindhya continued to scale heights and employ close to 1600 employs now of which majority are people with disabilities and people who are deprived of opportunities.
Impacting lives
Gone are the days where differently- abled people are considered as a liability. Now, many are the bread winners of the family, many support the education of their siblings, take care of their family, purchase land and flat in their hometowns and city, all of which is never expected of them. By getting employment, they become financially independent and lead a dignified life in the society.
Collective work from the management and employees has helped Vindhya to be successful and sustainable all through these years. Training is very crucial part of deliverables. We have introduced Braille manuals for VI, customized customers’ application with assistive technologies
At Vindhya, gender equality is very important which is why 50%of main workforce is women and also, we practice diversity by employing trans-people into our workforce. Vindhya also conduct job fairs and camps in rural areas to create awareness among public about employment opportunities and thus, mainstream people from marginalized communities
Vision
Vindhya’s vision is to employ 5000 employees by 2022 and give employment to as many people as possible who are deprived of opportunities and all types of disabilities.
