About Nargis X Close
Nargis, born in a deprived community in Afghanistan. She struggled to raise as a human with equal rights and a vision for a bright future.
Even, when she born, her family was motivated to exchange her with a nearby new born boy, but her father denied the offer and resisted to support her. Later, the boy become a terrorist and exploded herself in Urozgan province, Afghanistan.
Hardship, struggles and challenges in her early life offered her strong intentions for positive change toward equal rights and gender equality.
After the defeat of Taliban, her family moved and settled in Kabul, at the support for her father, she started her school. In school, she met with girls from diverse backgrounds, she listened to their stories and noted the similarities between her and their lives.
She established first female student’s council in school. The aim of the council was to work together for a common cause, which wad to bring favorable conditions for girls’ education. Later, the council led by her, she devoted a new vision to the council and focused to help and consult students in their personal lives. In addition, the council under her leadership held negotiations with their families and motivated the family to keep continuous support for girl’s education.
She was 15, when she actively participated in a door to door campaign to motivate families for allowing her female family members to get education. She voluntarily worked along with other activists, and the results were quite impressive, at the end of the campaign, they succeeded to register hundreds of girls in local school and grabbed the support of their families in favor of girls’ education.
It was the beginning of raising a leader within herself. She brought the idea with herself; that bringing changes in a war-torn community required high leadership skills to motivate individuals for a collective work. Based on that understanding, she deepens her work with communities and broaden her vision toward women empowerment.
At university, deepen her strategy for social engagement, and even deeply started her work with diverse civil society organization to seek coalition for wider national efforts to tackle discrimination against women and promote gender equality.
She elected as student representative, with the goal to decrease sexual harassment and help improve condition for girl’s education.
She believes that a leader needs to be committed and persistence to attain his/her goals, based on that, she constantly works with local communities. Her constant work with communities helped her to deepen her insight from Afghan social structure, gain productive experience about working with communities and enhance her skills as a leader to motivate and lead the Afghan women voice for a positive change.
