Om Creations Trust began in 1991 as a pioneering Non-Profit Training Project for Holistic and Educational Rehabilitation of Mentally-Challenged Women in the age group 20-60 years.
It is a workshop where these marginalised members of Society are able not only to earn a living but also to earn and live a life of dignity and self-worth. Through vocational skills namely VISUAL ARTS: like painting, tailoring, bead work, tye and dye and through CERAMICS. Om Creations has stepped in as a beacon of hope for these women as well as for their families, assuring a safe and inclusive haven for them which use innovative teaching in training persons with disability.
Om Creations has gone ahead with conviction that this sector of marginalised members need not be at the mercy of Society or of unscrupulous elements by providing them a safe, healthy environment where they can be amongst their own group of friends, happy in what they are achieving - a stipend at the end of the month as well as self-esteem.
Om Creations was started with the aim of rehabilitating the differently abled to live an active and inclusive life when there was hardly any awareness about integrating the specially-abled into mainstream. Om Creations thus, is a place of work for young adults and women with multiple disabilities, where they earn a livelihood and live a life of dignity and self-worth.
Om Creations heralds a new beginning for changing mindsets of people to make them understand that even the mentally challenged have inborn strengths which if tapped and nurtured, can be leveraged to bring forth unimaginable creative talent. It is also about changing the lives of the differently abled, allowing them to flourish instead of languishing at home and about allowing them to grow.
With no Government support, lack of awareness and negative mindsets of people at large, it has been a daunting and challenging task to bring Om Creations to the level it has reached today. With conviction and courage Om Creations took on the task of proving that with training, love and care they can be made productive members of society and lead as normal a life as possible.
Dealing with women with multiple disabilities requires a lot of patience, loving care and attention, all of which are found in plenty at Om Creations. Om Creations has succeeded in bringing an attitudinal shift in the mindset of the parents as well, to accept and value their special child, corporate segments have welcomed them as productive employees and society as a whole has accepted them in an inclusive manner.
Om Creations Trust is therefore a Catalyst of Dreams: Of dreams that are as special as the women who dream them.It is a place where the women enjoy coming to, and where the parents feel at ease to send their differently-abled children to, as they know they are in a safe and happy environment. Om Creations has two full-fledged production/teaching departments led by a dedicated team of professionals and experts and volunteers who are happy to be a part of the transformation:
* The Visual Arts & Ceramic Department which produces a rich and diverse bouquet of finely-crafted lifestyle products in multiple media like paper, fabric, canvas, clay, ceramic and wood – tablecloths, paper folders, tissue batwas, sari bags, embroidered bags, crochet coasters, laces, wall plates, coasters, scarves, lap trays, canvas paintings and much more.
* The Catering Department makes a wide range of savouries and snacks like pastries, brownies, cookies, tarts, cakes, chocolates, sauces, pickles, dips and sherbets. Hand-crafted chocolates made by the mentally-challenged women under the supervision of trained chefs are very popular.
Om Creations Trust is an integral social enterprise and in the process of production and evolution it addresses significant social and economic issues:
* Of ensuring livelihoods of mentally-challenged women in sheltered environs
* Of promoting inclusiveness and dignity of mentally-challenged adults
* Of continuous upgrading skills of the beneficiary-workers
* Of providing therapeutic and healing value for the beneficiary-workers through work
* Of stimulating community development
* Of ensuring sustainability of a social enterprise
Shraddha charitable trust:
Shraddha Charitable Trust, a registered non-profit vocational workshop founded in 1998, empowers and rehabilitates severely autistic and mentally challenged young adults and enables them to earn a living. By handcrafting and selling tastefully designed and internationally appreciated eco friendly products, Shraddha provides a means of livelihood and support for those that are often assumed to lead a dependent life.
Om Abode- A social innovation center for multiple disabilities.
There are 20 million mentally challenged persons in India and it is high time society recognizes the fact that they can be trained to be productive members of society and not shunned or left to the mercy of unscrupulous elements. We at Om Creations would like to reach out to thousands of mentally challenged women and change their lives and the lives of their parents, siblings and guardians. With the training received at Om, the life-span of these young adults is increasing and they are outliving their parents, who fear for their children.
To address the growing need and many more concerns Om Creations has started a multi-functional space titled Om Abode at Karjat – a residential Social Innovation Institution complex that will house workshops for all its vocational activities. Situated at Khandpe village, Karjat, this residential facility will come over a 12 acre plot to be completed over two phases. It is only through encouragement from individuals and institutions that we are able to work towards meeting our objective of providing mentally challenged young adults with a life of dignity and self-worth.
