Pune: iWGA proudly presents this year’s Awardee in Social Work category, Ruma Devi. Committed towards change, Ruma Devi started ‘Deep Daval’ self help group on a very nominal budget. She procured sewing machines and started manufacturing for local clientele. In the year 2008 she became a member of GVCS and started working towards the upliftment of women in all spheres possible. A highly competent individual, Ruma got elected as President GVCS.
She has been instrumental in making the artisans a better organised community through her efforts such as Base line survey of artisans, Skill development training for artisans, Design development training of artisans and inititaves like that.
Leader, mentor and an expert craftsman, Ruma has trained 20,000 women artisans working in the Thar region of Rajasthan. She has been a promoter of hand crafted products made by women. She has herself modeled for handcrafted apparels made by Thar women on ramp shows at the state and national level.
As a leader who believes in leading from the front, she has worked at all levels for promotion of the dying art of Rajasthan. She has been coordinating activities of craft development in the western region of Rajasthan for the past 10 years. She has also presented and promoted the local art and craft on many national and international forums. Ruma has been awarded and felicitated by the governements as well as organizations globally.
