Eleanor Wahler, Beloved Matriarch, Passes Away at 92 Surrounded by Family

Tonawanda, New York – Eleanor Wahler, a cherished matriarch and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, at the age of 92. She was surrounded by her family, and her passing was described as a "good death," reflecting a life well-lived and the love she shared with those around her.

Eleanor E. Wahler (née Estes) was the devoted wife of the late Robert G. Wahler Sr. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and dedication to her family, including her four children: Deborah Russell, Diane Pohlar, Susanne King, and Robert Wahler Jr. She was a cherished grandmother to eight grandchildren and a proud great-grandmother to eleven. Eleanor was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Westenfeld, but her memory will live on through her many nieces and nephews.

Her son, Bob Wahler, shared the news on Facebook, stating, "It is with a mixture of sadness and relief to share the passing of my Mom. She was surrounded by her children, not suffering. In my hospice work, we’d call this a ‘good death’. We will miss her greatly. She experienced an amazing 97 years and set an example for all of us as a ‘channel of peace’."

Many friends and family members have expressed their condolences and shared fond memories of Eleanor on social media. Melanie Bilz DeTone commented, "My deepest condolences to you and your family. I hope you find comfort in the good memories you have of her." Paula Gazeley Daily added, "Lifting you up in prayer during this difficult time and praying your memories of her ease your grief—sending love."

Eleanor’s life will be celebrated with a visitation on Wednesday, October 9th, from 4-7 PM at the C. Mertz & Son Funeral Home, Inc., located at 911 Englewood Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday, October 10th, at 9:30 AM at St. Amelia Church, 2999 Eggert Rd., Tonawanda. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Eleanor’s memory to Queen City Hospice, in gratitude for the compassionate care she received in her final days.

Eleanor Wahler will be remembered for her deep faith, her devotion to her family, and her kind spirit. May she rest in peace.
