Mississippi – Dr. Don Quinton Mitchell, a revered physician and influential leader in the state’s medical community, passed away on September 19, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on August 11, 1942, in the Mississippi Delta, Dr. Mitchell’s life was marked by a commitment to medicine, family, and service to his country.
Growing up in Bolivar County, Dr. Mitchell attended Cleveland High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically, earning a football scholarship to Millsaps College. It was there that he met his wife, Mary Sue McDonnell Mitchell, to whom he boldly declared his intention to marry upon their first meeting. Their marriage spanned 60 years, during which they shared leadership roles on campus, earning them the affectionate nicknames “the old man” and “the old lady.”
Dr. Mitchell graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1967. His medical career spanned decades, including 24 years of service in the Air Force and Mississippi Air National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Brigadier General. In 1975, he joined the Mississippi Asthma and Allergy Clinic, where his compassionate approach to medicine earned him a loyal patient base.
Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Mitchell held leadership positions in various medical associations and was recognized for his contributions to the fields of allergy and immunology. He was also a dedicated family man who enjoyed music, traveling, and spending time outdoors. His love and care for his family were reciprocated, especially in his later years.
Dr. Mitchell leaves behind his wife, children, grandchildren, and siblings, all of whom will continue to cherish his legacy of love, service, and joy.
A celebration of Dr. Mitchell’s life will be held on September 26 at Christ United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to a charity of choice.
