Dennis Dwayne Porter, Beloved Floris Volunteer Firefighter, Passes Away at 68 in Ottumwa, Iowa

Floris, Iowa – Dennis Dwayne Porter, a dedicated volunteer firefighter from Floris, Iowa, passed away on September 19, 2024, at the age of 68. He was surrounded by family at the Hospice House in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Born on August 26, 1956, in Ottumwa to Emmett and Beverly Bridgeman Porter, Dennis graduated from Davis County High School in 1975. He married Robin Lynne Brooks on August 17, 1979, and together they built a family filled with love and devotion.

Dennis served the Floris and Bloomfield Fire Departments with unwavering dedication for 36 years. He was also active in fire and safety roles at the Bloomfield and Oskaloosa racetracks. His passion extended beyond his firefighting duties, as he was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed local dirt track racing, hunting, and fishing. Known for his generosity and willingness to help others, Dennis was a cherished member of his community.

He is survived by his wife, Robin, and his children, David Brooks (Danielle) of Fairfield, Iowa, Steven Porter of Floris, and Laura Katzartones (Derek, whom Dennis considered a son) of Floris. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Michael and Zachary Brooks, Olivia and Lucas Porter, and Riley and Gauge Katzartones. Additionally, Dennis is survived by his sister, Sarah Miller (Dwight) of Floris, and two brothers, Don Porter (Vicki Fosnacht) of New Windsor, Illinois, and Darrell Porter of Ottumwa.

Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Gordon Hawkins at Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., with interment at Floris Cemetery. The visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, with family available to receive condolences from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
